The Mechanism of a Growth Acceleration and the Role of Trade: Micro-Level Evidence from Chile

چکیده

The current study provides a contingent and bottom-up approach to the extensively investigated relationship between trade and growth. It focuses on the specific case of rapid episodes of growth in which trade may play a role for static Ricardian reasons. The case study considered is the Chilean acceleration of 1986; thanks to an extensive dataset of Chilean plants from 1982 to 1993, micro-level evidence of productivity growth is provided as the main determinant of the growth acceleration. Results confirm that the increase in productivity played an important role, even in the short-run, but trade reforms had a positive impact only on sectors which are both import-competing and export oriented.
